39 transition to 45

IndivisibleCA39(45) February Meeting Minutes

After redistricting, our organization is changing names from Indivisible CA 39 to Indivisible CA 45.
We will continue to advocate for progressive values with old and new allies under our new banner.

NEW MONTHLY RECAP!

For those who could not attend Indivisible CA 39′s General Meeting on 2/24/22, please find minutes below with lots of information and resources/links at the bottom to keep for future reference!

1. The Democratic Party of OC (DPOC) via Lyndsey Lefebvre, Organizing Director, is spearheading a Good Neighbor Program throughout our district and the county. You pair up with a partner and go door-to-door to talk to Democrats, Independents, or No Party Preference (NPPs). It could be your neighborhood or a different part of town or district. Lyndsey provides all the literature to leave behind, but the goal is to have conversations with people to talk about what they care about and value. Canvassing has been shown to be the best way to motivate voters to vote in elections! Contact info:
office: (714) 634-3367; https://orangecountydemocrats.com/

There are volunteer opportunities for a Central Organizer and a Northern Organizer to help coordinate with the various groups and help reach out to voters. Contact Lyndsey if you’d like to learn more!

4. Two members, Patty Hanzo and Susan Perlson, attended a webinar by Tracy La, co-founder of VietRISE, Vincent Tran, and Jay Clark with the Othering and Belonging Institute at U.C. Berkeley to discuss recent research: “Vietnamese voices from OC: Narratives of Community, Government and Change”. VietRISE is based in Little Saigon which consists of Garden Grove, Westminster, Fountain Valley, the West parts of Santa Ana, and the Southern part of Anaheim. It was a very informative webinar and the report is listed below to read more about the research, focus groups, and tools. The findings were divided into 4 arenas:

  • Government –  revealed that Vietnamese Americans felt that the government should be active and responsible in providing services and ensuring that economic needs are met. (No mention of taxes or regulations).
  • Politics –  reflected an aversion to political partisanship and a strong voting ethic.
  • Intergroup Relationships –  reflected a desire for more opportunities to have inter-group interactions, with an acknowledgment of racism and discrimination in the country. Anti-Asian and Anti-Black violence was recognized as getting worse, with the view that the government should do more to address it.
  • Community and Generational –  reflected a deep investment in the Vietnamese community, how the community’s past is remembered with optimism and hopefulness for the future. Unity was most important and strengthening, keeping ties across intergenerational lines.

5. We opened the meeting in honor of the Ukrainians as they fought against a Russian invasion, and we closed the meeting in honor of Black History Month. Gus Castellanos, our amazing video photographer, videotaped numerous Black Lives Matter actions, rallies and marches throughout Orange County, with the youth demonstrating against police violence in the name of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, and countless others. Gus described it accordingly, “The youth in our community made a difference in the fight for equality in Orange County.” View the video on YouTube:  https://youtu.be/if69u5xoPDI The music was performed by Lola Kristine, www.musicoflola.com
Thank you, Gus, for all of your hard work and countless hours to stand as a witness and document our voices and spirit in the fight for justice!

**************
The district is very competitive, and the primary is June 7!
There are lots of opportunities to go talk to your neighbors or meet new people, as well as phone banking.
It will require the efforts of all of us, and every little bit helps.

Thank you and take care.
